Start with what each procedure changes
LASIK creates a corneal flap and uses an excimer laser for reshaping. Contoura is a topography-guided form of laser correction using corneal mapping information. ICL leaves the cornea untreated but involves intraocular lens implantation.
That distinction explains why their screening, risks and follow-up differ. A person unsuitable for corneal laser treatment is not automatically suitable for ICL.
Recovery cannot be reduced to one timetable
Early visual recovery and discomfort differ between individuals and procedures. Laser treatments can cause dryness, glare and residual refractive error. ICL has intraocular considerations such as pressure, inflammation, cataract and lens positioning.
Ask for expected restrictions based on your work, hobbies and eyes rather than relying on a friend’s experience.
Which questions should I ask my surgeon?
Which option do you recommend and why? What findings rule out the alternatives? What are the most relevant risks in my case? What enhancement or follow-up plan applies? What does the written quote include?
If the answers are unclear, take time or seek another qualified ophthalmic opinion. Elective surgery does not require a rushed choice.
| Factor | LASIK | Contoura Vision | ICL |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basic method | Corneal flap plus laser reshaping | Topography-guided corneal laser | Lens implanted inside the eye |
| Corneal flap | Yes | Usually, when performed as LASIK | No |
| Key checks | Refraction, cornea, tear film, eye health | Reliable corneal maps plus LASIK workup | Chamber dimensions, endothelium, pressure, retina |
| Important trade-off | Corneal and flap-related risks | Same LASIK risk categories; customised planning | Intraocular surgical and lens-related risks |
| Decision driver | Overall suitability and goals | Whether mapping adds useful benefit | Whether an implantable lens is safer or more appropriate |
